Hanford, Kings County
Hanford was founded by the Southern Pacific in 1877 and named for James Hanford, a railroad paymaster. Its downtown is built around a courthouse square, with the old 1896 courthouse now used for shops and offices. A block away, China Alley preserves a row of brick buildings from the 1880s and 1890s, including a Taoist temple, that once served a large Chinese community.
